A colorful addition is heading towards the library at Longfellow Elementary School in La Crosse, thanks to the work of some students.

Eighth grad students have been working alongside Joe Kuhn, a retired art teacher, to create a huge metal sculpture to hang on the wall in the library's computer lab.

On Wednesday, the students were putting the finishing touches on the 16 foot piece of art. It's expected to go up on the wall some time Thursday morning.

Through the process, students learned some new artistic techniques, and had some fun along the way.

"We used a metal bender most of us for the first time to make some different shapes to put on the sculpture and we learned to fade colors with spray paint which was really cool," said 8th grader Mackenzie Klaeser.
"It looks pretty cool, I'm pretty excited to see what comes out," said 8th grader Kyle Gilbertson.

It took about six months for the project to be completed from design to showing.
