Coast Guard Auxiliary gives free boat inspections
We are just a little more than a week away from Memorial day, which also marks the kick-off of the summer boating season.
While it's a popular and fun activity in the La Crosse area it can also be dangerous.
That's why members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary were out at the Copeland boat landing in La Crosse on Saturday giving free boat inspections.
They were looking for safety measures like having life jackets, flares and fire extinguishers on board.
Organizers said taking the time to have your boat inspected is not only important for your safety, but will also give you peace of mind when heading out on the water.
"You should have vessel safety checks that way when you go out on the water with your family and friends you know your vessel is safe, you have the flares, the fire extinguishers, everything you need to be safe on the river," said U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary member Marion Byerson.
Byerson says it's also important to make sure your registration is current and your navigation lights are working.
