The city of La Crosse is looking to crack down on snow-covered sidewalks this winter.
The Board of Public Works signed off on a plan to use a private contractor to patrol sidewalks 24-hours after a snowstorm.
Midwest Roll-Off has been clearing snow the past three winters, but this year they'll have the authority to identify problem areas.
Property owners will only get one paper warning this year. After that, the city will clear the walk at the owner's expense.
The idea is to speed up the clearing process. "Last year, some of these walks weren't getting cleared maybe 7 to 8 days past a snowfall and some concern was that they weren't getting cleared quick enough," said City Engineer Assistant Doug Kerns.
Property owners will have to pay $2.50 per lineal foot, plus a $50 administrative fee. They'll also face a $75 citation.
