Need some help on a paint or fix-it project outside your home? The city of La Crosse wants to pay for part of it.

Thanks to a grant from the La Crosse Community Foundation, about 100 projects will be partially funded.

It can be something as simple as a new coat of paint on a house to re-building a broken fence. Already, 15 applications have been approved and each can be worth up to $800.

A city official says they did something like this about six years ago in the Washburn neighborhood and one thing he noticed was a spillover effect. "If people in your neighborhood go out and see their neighbors fixing up their homes and taking care of their homes and taking pride in it, then other people go out and start doing, you know, you don't want to have the worst house on the block," said senior planner Tim Acklin.
