MADISON, Wis. (AP) -

A coalition of church congregations has launched a four-month campaign to demand reforms within the state Department of Corrections.

WISDOM, an umbrella organization of congregations from around Wisconsin, kicked off its Reform Now campaign Wednesday with a news conference at the state Capitol.

The group's leaders said DOC is failing to parole inmates the group feels should be released. The group cited data from the state Legislative Fiscal Bureau that shows nearly 3,000 prisoners are eligible for parole and keeping them locked up costs $96 million per year.

WISDOM plans to hold monthly news conferences through October to draw attention to other problems it sees in DOC, including overcrowding, solitary confinement and aging and ill inmates who haven't been released.

A DOC spokeswoman didn't immediately return telephone and email messages.
