The Waukee district removed a school bus driver from his route after he took a group picture of students and asked two girls to pass along his contact information to their teachers.

The Des Moines Register says the girls' parents notified the district because the driver wrote down his phone number and email address on a piece of paper and handed it to the girls on Sept. 19.

Waukee Superintendent David Wilkerson says the bus driver's behavior was inappropriate.

Wilkerson says it appears the driver wanted to set up a "pen pal correspondence" with students in Tennessee, where the driver has a regular route. He works for Durham School Services, a national bus company.

Waukee hired Durham to operate district buses. He's helping fill a local shortage of drivers.
