YMCA Offers Free Swim Lessons
Two Separate Week-Long Sessions
Swimming is great exercise and great fun, but can be dangerous if you don't know how to swim.
That's why the Coulee Region Safe Kids Coalition is teaming up with the Y to offer two free swim lesson sessions.
The lessons are available to children between the ages of six and fourteen. Participants will learn the basic abilities needed to be in the water.
Organizers of the event say about 400 children under the age of 14 drown in the water every year. That's why they believe swimming is an important life skill for everyone to know.
"They like to splash around and explore and play with different things; the water is always a big temptation for kids so it's important for kids to learn to respect the water and be safe around it," said Courney Daniels, Aquatic Director for the Y.
Lessons begin tomorrow at the North YMCA in Onalaska. The second session is the week of the 15th at the La Crosse location. The last day of lessons will include a Safety Fair with healthy snacks and presentations from local safety officials and area business. All of the lessons will be in the evening.
- Children ages 6-8 are from 5:00 p.m. until 5:40 p.m.
- Children ages 9-14 are from 5:45 p.m. untli 6:25 p.m.
