LA CROSSE, Wis. -- High schoolers from across Wisconsin took to the slopes of Mount La Crosse on Saturday in hopes of capturing a state title.

The state ski and snowboard championships, kicked off Saturday with the boarder cross event.

The competition runs through Monday.

Teams were out on the course training Friday, which was important because the hills are steeper than what some of the competitors are used to.

Despite all the recent warm weather, organizers said the snow  on the hill is in great shape.

They're happy to be hosting the state tournament.

"The neat thing about this event is its a big event for Mount La Crosse as a ski and snowboard area, but its just a huge event for the area in general. Hotels are full, restaurants are full all weekend long. So it just brings in a lot of extra business to the community at a time when sales are sort of slow," said Mount La Crosse Marketing Director Darcie Breidel.

Organizers said there are skiers and snowboarders from nearly 50 different schools at the event and a total of 440 students competing.
