As the ice things and people start getting active near the water, it's important to know what to do if you see someone fall in.
Steve Kramer with the La Crosse Fire Department says it's important to not just jump right in after them. The first thing you should do is call 911 to get help there as soon as possible.
However, if you do choose to jump in, there's a few steps to take before you leap.
"Try to grab anything long, a branch, anything close by that you can use to reach out to that person in the water, because chances are if they went in there, you might go too so the farther away you can keep from them the chances of you going in will be less," says Kramer.
Earlier this week in South Dakota, two adults drown after jumping in a river to save a boy who had fallen in.
