Veterans Day is being celebrated across the country
And in La Crosse.
honoring veterans is *literally* built right into
News 8's Madalyn O'Neill tells us about a place that
stands in honor of our war heroes year-round.
The Veterans Hall of Honor built inside the U-W-La
Crosse Veterans memorial Field Sports Complex was
host to a special memorial ceremony .
before the sixth annual Veteran's Day breakfast at
Mitchell Hall Fieldhouse.
Those who spoke at the event say no other campus in
the Wisconsin system honors veterans like U-W-L.
The event gave vets of all generations a chance to
remember, reflect and relate.

It's so different now than when I came home in the
40s you know, they welcomed you home but it isn't
like it was today.
they really make a thing out of veterans day.
Freedom Honor Flight and UW-La Crosse Athletics host
a Veterans Day Breakfast every year ...
I don't think I missed a one.
to add some fanfare to the holiday.
So many veterans came home from service and there
were no ticker tape parades or big welcome homes,
this its a way of thanking them.
UW-L athlete volunteers and ROTC students are happy
to serve those who have already served.
It's the one day that's set aside a year to recognize
their service and sacrifice to the nation, and especially
for all of us the young athletes and cadets to come
here and recognize them and talk to them and serve
them breakfast, I think it really means a lot.

Like other holidays, it's also a day about family

As a multi generation veteran , my grandfather was
in Vietnam, my dad and I
both served in Iraq and Afghanistan,
This is like family holiday.
A holiday that brings together family by blood, and
also family formed by service.
This is our day and we certainly appreciate everyone
coming out to honor our service.

The breakfast drew in about 600 people today, and
organizers say it's grown every year.
Next year they're expecting an even bigger crowd because
Veteran's Day lands on a Saturday.

They'll also have a World War II training plane fly
over the stadium at the start of the game.
