UW-L students continue to move out of dorm
LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The mid-semester move-out continues for nearly 300 UW-La Crosse students.
The students were forced out of Drake Hall after a fire last weekend in the dorm's basement.
In fact, the building will be closed for the rest of the semester while crews fix all the damage.
On Saturday, students continued moving their stuff out of the dorm. A process that started on Friday.
UW-La Crosse has made other on-campus housing available for the students.
But the whole situation has been time consuming and stressful.
Many students say they just want to get back to focusing on their studies.
Drake resident Allison Moncrief said, "It's a little tough. It definitely throws a curveball, but hopefully once I move back in and get a schedule again it will start come together. Then I can start focusing on school and everything again."
The move out process is going quickly at Drake Hall thanks to help from countless volunteers including many other UW-L students.
That includes members of the men's club volleyball team.
Team members said helping pack up and carry a few boxes is the least they can do to help.
Student Nick Korom came to help out. He said he can only imagine how stressful it would be to be in his fellow classmates shoes.
"It would be kind of tough to live. They've almost been a week without their stuff, so it would be hard," he said.
Student Danny Chipman was also helping out. He said, "Yeah, having to come and go and not being able to get into your stuff, it's got to be difficult. Especially with classes going on."
Chancellor Joe Gow told us many of the students enjoyed living in Drake Hall so much this year, that they've already signed up to live there again this fall.
By then, the dorm is expected to be back open.
