UPDATE: Crash kills three Eleva-Strum students
TOWN OF WASHINGTON, Wis. -- Three teenagers are dead and two others injured in a car crash that's left a small community in shock.
SLIDESHOW: Eau Claire Co. Fatal Crash
All five of the teenagers involved in the crash are students in the Eleva-Strum School District. The driver was just 14-years-old.
The crash happened just before 7:00 Tuesday night on Walnut Road, which is in southern Eau Claire County.
Too young to even have a learner's permit, police say 14-year-old Austin Gable got behind the wheel of his friend's car with four other teenagers.
Investigators say Gable was driving at a high speed, lost control going down a steep hill, and veered into a ditch, hitting a tree.
Gable and 13-year-old McKenna Johnson, who was in the front seat, were killed on impact.
Three other teenagers in the backseat were taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
15-year-old Marco Perez died of his injuries Wednesday afternoon.
13-year-old Ulises Ponce remains hospitalized as well as 16-year-old Felicia Bertrang, whose parents own the car.
"It's extremely difficult, tragic accidents like this one. You can say that you're ready for it and you've prepared yourself but, honestly, you never can. All you can do is come out, do the best job you can do, and be there for the family and victims, and be a voice for them," said Eau Claire Co. Sheriff’s Office Deputy Ryan Greener.
Eleva-Strum School District Superintendent Craig Semingson says Johnson will be remembered for her love of music and singing.
Gable was known as the class clown, who anyone could go to for a laugh.
Perez was an outgoing member of the football team.
Eleva-Strum, along with nearby school districts, is providing counselors to students who need someone to talk to.
"All of the students knew who the students who died were. We're a building of 300 students, so you see the same faces every day of the year. So you know who they are," said Semingson.
Investigators say speed appears to be a factor in the crash. Right now, they don't think alcohol was involved. They don't know whether cell phone use was a factor or if they were all wearing seatbelts.
The Eau Claire County Sheriff's Office and the State Patrol processed the scene of the accident Tuesday night. Wednesday, they reconstructed the crash, using tire marks and other evidence.
