UPDATE: Sparta man shot by police appears in court

SPARTA, Wis. -- Formal charges are pending against a Sparta man shot by police after he pointed a rifle at officers.
19-year-old Jacob Olsen was shot twice by Sgt. Booker Ferguson January 19 after ignoring commands to drop the rifle.
Olsen was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in in Sparta, but was transferred to Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse for treatment of gunshots wounds to the chest and abdomen.
Olsen was released from the hospital February 17, and was booked into the Monroe County Jail on possible charges of pointing a gun at an officer and second-degree recklessly endangering safety.
Olsen appeared in Monroe County Court Monday afternoon. $2,500 bail was set, and Olsen was scheduled to appear in court again next week.
Ferguson was put on administrative leave, but has since returned to work. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is completing a report on the shooting, which will be given to Monroe County District Attorney Dan Cary for review.
