Tribe worries about effect of Cedar Rapids casino
The Sac and Fox Tribe worries that its Meskwaki Casino in east-central Iowa would suffer if a casino were to go up near Cedar Rapids in Linn County.
Tribal chairman Frank Black Cloud says the tribe and the Tama community could lose jobs and business to a new casino nearby. He says the Meskwaki Casino has more than 870 employees, including more than 100 tribal members.
Black Cloud says casino profits go toward housing, education and health projects on the reservation.
Linn County has scheduled a public vote March 5 on casino gambling. If the measure passes, developers still would have to gain state approval for their $80 million to $100 million project.
