Backyard chickens and their homes will be in the spotlight in Cedar Rapids this weekend.
The Gazette says the annual Tour de Coop on Saturday features a-half dozen hen houses to offer ideas to aspiring chicken owners. Organizer Rebecca Mumaw says the tour is garnering interest outside of Cedar Rapids.
The city approved an ordinance in 2010 that allows up to six hens per household. Two years later, about 50 families have permits to keep chickens, and another 200 have taken the educational workshop needed for a permit.
Some examples on this year tour include a combination greenhouse coop and an "artsy" coop that features a solar-powered door and stained glass.
