Three fire departments in eastern Iowa have been awarded federal grants aimed at improving response time to emergencies.

Departments in Asbury, Marengo and Charlotte will share nearly $140,000 from a firefighters assistance program run by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The Asbury Community Fire Department will get more than $91,000. The City of Marengo Fire Department will get nearly $40,000. The Charlotte Community Fire Association will get a little over $8,000.

The money will be used for training, protective equipment and other supplies that allow more effective response time to emergencies.
