About 55-hundred people in Wisconsin are hospitalized
every year after self-inflicted injuries.
and seven-hundred people kill themselves.
But here in La Crosse county.
the suicide rate so far this year is down.
News 8's Madalyn O'Neill has more.
In 2014, a record number of people committed suicide
in La Crosse County, and that number was still high
With one month left, the number is on pace to actually
fall below average this year.
Health officials aren't sure the exact reason for
the lower number .
but they're hoping it's a trend that continues in
the coming years.
This is '16 so far.
The La Crosse County Medical Examiner knows all too
well the impact of suicide in our community
I worked over 100 almost 200 suicides in the past
He keeps track of how many people commit suicide in
La Crosse County every year.
With one month left in 2016 ...
Presently we're at 14 for the year so it's kind of
down from last years totals, which is a good thing,
but obviosuly one is too many.
In 2015 we were at 22...
14 is down from 22 suicides in 20-15 .
and a record breaking 26 in 2014.
and this year's number looks more like those seen
in previous years.
Statistics show the most likely person to commit suicide
is a middle aged man and that is also true in La Crosse
I think that suicide rate are higher in men because
it's harder for men to seek help and assistence when
they're having a rough time.
but the number of women who commit suicide has gone
Trends in La Crosse county show an increase in women
bucking the trend a little bit, .
this year we're probably at least 5 or 6 women who
have committed suicide.
Health officials like Gundersen Nurse Geri Mulliner
say they're not sure why the numbers spiked a few
years ago ...
It's hard to say.
I just hope it doesn't repeat itself.
But they hope this year's lower numbers have something
to do with community efforts like the La Crosse Area
suicide prevention initiative..
I hope it means we have made some progress with community
awareness that suicide is a preventable problem .
that anyone in the community can help.

The medical examiner says there's no specific time
of year when people are more likely to commit suicide
but one thing to keep in mind this time of year is

lot of us as the weather changes.
