Structural problems have prompted officials to close a historic Muscatine church to regular services.
The Muscatine Journal reports officials decided earlier this month to stop regular services at St. Mary's Catholic Church, which dates to the 1800s.
The Rev. Jason K. Crossen says the church needs work on several areas, including repairs to a sagging floor, work on the brick exterior and replacement of the roof.
Crossen says an early estimate of repairs came in at more than $1 million.
Financial concerns have previously prompted calls to close St. Mary's, but Crossen says parishioners feel strongly about maintaining the church.
