Sparta Police release more details of officer-involved shooting
SPARTA, Wis. -- A police officer with nearly a decade of experience shoots a man who pointed a rifle at him after the man ignored repeated requests to put the rifle down.
Sparta Police say 19-year-old Jacob Olsen was armed with the rifle and confronted officers when they responded January 19 to a 911 hang-up call at 416 Austin Street.
After officers repeatedly ordered Olsen to put the rifle down, Olsen pointed the rifle at Sgt. Booker Ferguson.
Ferguson fired his handgun, hitting Olson. Sparta Police Chief Mike Kass declined to tell News 8 where Olsen was hit, citing an ongoing investigation.
Olsen was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Sparta, and was later transferred to Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse with life-threatening injuries.
No update on Olsen's condition was available for Olsen Monday afternoon. Ferguson was not injured in the incident.
Kass says he was not aware of any prior incidents at the home.
The rifle, along with other evidence, was recovered at the scene. The shooting is being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Wisconsin State Patrol, Monroe County Sheriff's Department and Sparta Police.
Kass says Ferguson is a nine-year veteran of the Sparta Police Department, who previously worked part-time with the Bangor Police Department.
