LA CROSSE, Wis. -

La Crosse police caught a suspected thief with the help of social media and the community.

They posted a picture on their Facebook page of a woman wanted for a suspected theft. Within hours, tips came flooding in and the suspect was arrested.

The department says social media has become a valuable tool in not only getting info to the public, but also letting the public contact them.

They have done this for year's on their website, but social media gives them an extra advantage. "With the social media, if they've liked our La Crosse Police Department, then if we send that message out we get it right away, they get the notice and it goes on their Facebook page and then there's just a quick response," said Lt. Pat Hogan.

If you are interested in becoming part of their social media network, there are a few options. For facebook, go to facebook.com/la crosse police. For twitter, it's @lacrossepolice.
