The Salvation Army's annual holiday fundraising Red Kettle Drive is going digital in an effort to attract younger donors.
The Des Moines Register reports that smartphone users can now donate via credit card to the familiar bell ringers at 60 locations in the Des Moines metro area.
All kettles are outfitted with a QR code, which, when scanned by a smartphone, takes users to the Salvation Army's Paypal website. Donors can also text "givedm" to 80464 to be directed to Paypal. There, donors can give to the campaign using a credit card.
The Salvation Army's Maj. David Corliss says the digital giving initiative could help the organization support an increase in requests for its food pantries, diaper programs, recreational programs and hot breakfasts.
