Salvation Army gets donation from community garden
LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The Salvation Army is getting some help keeping its shelves stocked.
The Washburn Community Garden is donating a portion of the food grown there this year to the organization.
The garden yielded more than 500 pounds of food, which will be distributed to meal sites throughout the community.
Each gardener also paid $30 for their own plot of land, raising more than $1,300 for the St. Claire Health Mission.
This is the 2nd year for the garden, which not only helps people in need, but also creates a sense of community.
"It has brought people together, get's them outside, gets them gardening, and it gets them talking to one another so it has helped build some sense of community there as well," said Michael Brown of the St. Clare Health Mission.
Lincoln Middle School students also grew and harvested pumpkins at the garden.
