Homelessness continues to be a problem throughout
the La Crosse community.
But one local class is looking to help in a small
by making care packages for those in need.
News eight's Eric Jacobson joins us now with more.
Mike and Martha,
Riverfront provides classes and support for those
with disabilities in our region.
One of their classes this semester offers students
the chance to learn more about homelessness in the
and what they can do to help.
The class's main goal: Treat others how you would
like to be treated.
There is a bit of packing going on in Meredith Jensen's
Those can go in yours
But *these bags are for a much greater cause.
I am going to Viterbo for social work, and we started
off class learning about some of the poverty and the
homeless issues, and I saw the problem and knew something
had to be done.
Over the course of a semester.
Jensen's class is working on producing 25 care packages
that will be given to the area's homeless.
In each of our care packages, we have a set of hygiene
items that include
shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrush,
floss and mouthwash.
And her students...
I decided it would be really cool to help the homeless.
Are more than happy to help out.
I see them.
So sad they have no place to live, and they don't
have no food.
My favorite is to put clothes in them!
You have to be nice, kind!
But for Jensen.
the class is not only about helping the homeless.
it's about teaching others to be kind as well.
Everyone needs a helping hand at one point in their
life, and I think having them understand the need
and what we can do to help, I think that will push
them in the future to continue to do good things.
And that kindness is already making a difference.
There are many people in this world who are either
unable or unwilling to help the homeless, and so many
people look away from the homeless and think that
they're worthless, but I don't think that way.
In LAX, EJ, N8.
Jensen has already delivered five of the care packages
to some of the homeless.
which she says have been very well received.
The care packages also include clothing.
as well as a small snack.
