LA CROSSE, Wis. -- -

It's a month dedicated to recognizing a service that has helped people in emergency situations for decades.

March is American Red Cross Month, started 70 years ago by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

It's meant to honor the work of the Red Cross.

But as the Red Cross Regional Development director, Carol Abrahamzon will tell you, the organization would be nothing without its volunteers.

That's why the local Scenic Bluffs Chapter of the Red Cross is using this time as a way to honor those who dedicate their time to helping others.

"We have over 90 volunteers that are trained in the Scenic Bluffs Chapter who respond to house fires, a tornado, a flood, whatever it might be. They're giving up their own personal time. So whenever you see that happen, just stop and shake their hand and thank them for what they do," said Abrahamzon.

Some local restaurants are also participating in Red Cross Month.

On Wednesday, March 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. the Scenic Bluffs board members will be at Wine Guys in La Crosse to serve wine. All the proceeds will benefit the Red Cross.

Burrachos is also joining in. All month long $1 Red Cross squares will be available at all Burrachos locations. Proceeds will go to the Red Cross.

Culvers in Viroqua and Subway in Black River Falls will also be selling $1 Red Cross squares.
