PORT WASHINGTON, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities have identified a man who died after becoming separated from his kayak on the choppy waters of Lake Michigan near Milwaukee.
Police say 24-year-old Peter Dougherty, of Port Washington, was an experienced kayaker who often went paddling off the Port Washington Marina.
Witnesses called emergency officials about 11:45 a.m. Saturday to report seeing him in the water about 300 yards off the marina. Waves were as high as 5 feet. The Port Washington Fire Department's water-rescue team found him unconscious, pulled him into a rescue craft and began performing CPR. He was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m. at the Aurora Sinai Medical Center in Grafton.
Police say it appears Dougherty was kayaking and somehow became separated from his kayak.
The kayak was not immediately recovered.
