Onalaska holds first district-wide art show in years
Students in the Onalaska School District showed off their creativity in a special art show Saturday.
The district-wide art show featured paintings, drawings, pottery and sculptures from every single student in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Educators said the event helped show parents and community members the importance of the art curriculum in schools.
They said learning about art can teach students valuable skills they'll need in the future.
"It gives students the opportunity to express themselves, and that is a very important thing to do beyond elementary, middle, high school and college," said Sam Servais, a high school teacher in Onalaska. "You've got to be able to communicate about your feelings and ideas to whomever, your boss (or) your family and sometimes it's not easy to do that just through words, so art is a venue for that."
There were more than 1,000 pieces of art on display.
