ONALASKA, Wis. -

Onalaska residents are learning about the day in the life of a local police officer.

The Onalaska Police Department kicked off its 10-week Citizen Police Academy.

Wednesday night was orientation and chance to learn about general patrol tactics.

More than just showing what an officer does on a day to day basis, the course is designed to create a relationship between officers and members of the community. "This is a great way for us to get to speak with our public and hear what they have to say about our community and let them see what we do from our end," said officer Leah Myers.

The people taking part can look forward to a day on the shooting range, a tour of the dispatch center, and other day to day activities.
