LA CROSSE, Wis. -

The number of car-deer crashes increased by more than 1,000 in 2011 from the previous year, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The department says there were more than 18,000 crashes last year. Department leaders say now is the time to be extra cautious because it's mating season and the movements of deer are unpredictable. And odds are if you see one deer, there are more nearby.
