Northeast Iowa city will retain police force

The northeast Iowa city of Independence won't be disbanding its police force.

The City Council held a public workshop on the matter Thursday night and heard critics say they preferred keeping the local officers instead of contracting with another agency. The council also decided against hiring a consultant to study the issue.

City leaders say the idea of contracting out for policing services had been discussed for months as officials sought ways to save budget money. The leaders say they'll find other ways to economize.

Independence is the county seat of Buchanan County and has a population of about 6,000.
