CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -

The Linn County prosecutor says charges won't be filed against officers who arrested or otherwise were involved with a 33-year-old man who lost consciousness after his arrest and later died.

County Attorney Jerry Vander Sanden said Wednesday that he agreed with the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office that the death of Paul Saldivar was accidental. Saldivar died of asphyxia, caused in part by his intoxication.

Saldivar, of Cedar Rapids, died May 17, a week after he lost consciousness in a police car after being arrested for public drunkenness and on an outstanding warrant.

Officers say Saldivar resisted being put into the cruiser and struck his head on an armrest. Officer Shannon Aguero discovered that Saldivar was slumped over and unresponsive when they entered the Linn County Jail complex.
