Mining legislation could have big impact in La Crosse Co.
LA CROSSE, Wis.-- There's no iron ore mine in La Crosse. But if one is built in Ashland County in northern Wisconsin, it could have a far-reaching impact on thousands of homeowners across the state.
The State Assembly recently passed mining legislation clearing the way for such a mine.
Representative Steve Doyle says some of the wording in the bill could impact about one thousand La Crosse County residents.
The bill includes a provision nullifying state and local laws related to flood-plain management. That means homeowners all across Wisconsin would be in danger of losing federal flood insurance coverage.
"You have to have minimum, at least flood plain management ordinances or laws in your state for the protection of facilities, homes, structures like bridges and roads and so forth. Or, your state or your community is not eligible for federal flood insurance," says Rep. Steve Doyle.
Representative Doyle says he has given this information to State Senator Jennifer Shilling. He says he hopes the Senate makes significant changes to the bill to avoid the problem.
