Milwaukee County official to face bribery trial
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A court commissioner has decided that Milwaukee County Supervisor Johnny Thomas will go to trial on bribery allegations.
Thomas is accused of taking a $500 bribe in exchange for promoting a company on a county contract. The bribe was part of an undercover sting operation.
The charges say that one day after accepting the money, Thomas added an item to his committee agenda to extend the contract from the company he thought was offering the cash.
Thomas' defense attorneys argue he never asked for the money and was set up.
Thomas is a first-term supervisor. He was running for Milwaukee city comptroller but suspended that campaign.
The criminal complaint says Thomas admitted he took the money, but planned to return it. A pretrial conference is set for March 15.
