La Crosse Mayor Matt Harter says he will not veto the city budget after council members agreed to hold a special budget meeting.
The mayor had threatened a veto to try to stop a property tax increase of $50,000 in 2013. Instead of raising taxes, the mayor is proposing taking the $50,000 from the city's reserve fund which totals about 19 million dollars.
After speaking with council members last week about reconsidering the increase, the mayor decided not to veto the budget. "I felt that a reconsideration is a better route and after talking with members of the common council and coming to an agreement that this budget would be reconsidered, I chose not to veto the budget and to go the route of reconsidering it as I think we will have a better outcome going this route," said Harter.
The council is meeting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers at city hall.
