MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Madison zoo is showing off its new addition.

A male red panda named Lum arrived at Henry Vilas Zoo from a Cincinnati zoo about two months ago and is finally on display now that he's been introduced to 3-year-old Sha-Lei, the zoo's female red panda.

Zookeeper Jennifer Zuehlke says they tried to mate Sha-Lei with another red panda but Sha-Lei was indifferent. She called Lum an experienced breeder.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the pair's particular sub-species of red panda is native to China and is endangered. Their native habitat is being destroyed by deforestation.

Adding to that pressure is the fact that Lum is 12 years old and he's nearing the end of his life span. Also, red pandas are only fertile from January to March.
