LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -

It may not surprise you that we live in an artistic community.

But it may be a surprise to learn where the Pump House's latest art exhibit came from: La Crosse's elementary and middle schoolers.

Students created a piece in their art classes to fit the "Essence of Color" theme.

On Thursday night, night art lovers had the chance to ask those young artists about their work at an open house.

Art Specialist Maria Mason says the project and the showcase "gives a lot of support to the arts, and shows what students can do and how art can be integrated into other fields.  It brings them out and gives them a sense of pride.  I think that's really important to uplift them in a non-competitive way."

If you'd like to check out "The Essence of Color" exhibit, it's on display at the Pump House in La Crosse through Jan. 26th.
