A local humane society officer is receiving statewide recognition for helping animals.

Amiie Gabrilska received the first ever Humane Officer of the Year Award. The award was created by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer protection as a way to recognize people who are on the front line of caring for animals in need.

Gabrilska was nominated by her peers and says she didn't even know she was being considered.

She is honored to get the award, but says it belongs to her whole department. "Without the cooperation of everybody here in the staff and the ability to have the extra work that's done through the Coulee Region Humane Society, I feel this is an award that we all deserve and we all won," said Gabrilska.

The Department of Aagriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection plans to make this an annual award.
