As many are spending the holiday at home.
many in La Crosse spent the day volunteering to give
back to the community.
News 8's Sarah Thamer joins us now with the story.
Thanksgiving may be a day to relax and spend time
but for volunteers at La Crosse's 35th Annual Community
it was all about working hard to serve the people
who live here.
Over five-hundred volunteers showed up at today's
Community Thanksgiving dinner at the La Crosse Center
and they say a day of giving thanks should also be
a day of giving back.
It's rewarding, it's very rewarding.
That's one way to describe what it's like to pack
and serve 3,000 meals for people in La Crosse.
It's gonna be fun to see how many people get served.
For the last 35 years, La Crosse's Community Thanksgiving
Dinner was a way to remind the community that regardless
of who you are, sitting down to share a meal should
be an option for everyone.
We want everybody to come down here and share the
day with us, and have dinner with their fellow neighbors,
a lot of people come down year after year so they
get to know each other, which I think is awesome,
but it's for the whole community because its provided
by the community.
For some volunteers like Tom
Viner who has been volunteering
at the Thanksgiving dinner for ten years, says each
year there is something more special about taking
the time to serve others.
We have a lot of fun with it.
There is a lot of commoradry with the people down
here and a lot of old friends and it's a good thing.
The dinner was almost cancelled about a year ago due
to a lack of volunteers, but this year.
I enjoy it and I'm glad I have the opportunity to
serve the community.
It's anything but a lack of hands coming together
to celebrate being a little extra thankful...
For the opportunity to get out and meet new people,
over a meal prepared with gratitude.
There's a lot of hugs, there is tears at the end of
the day with some, I mean we've been doing it since
some kids were five or six and now they're in their
twenties, a lot of kids have grown up with us.
A day to be selfless, gives those who stop by, a memorable
day of giving thanks.
And thank you very much for everything everybody is
doing here, appreciate this lovely place.
The dinner's planning committee wants the public to
know that they are looking for new members to join
the committee and help with future events.
Today's community dinner took place from 10 to 3 P-M
and included variety of family activities along with
a magic show.
