La Crosse drinking water to have less fluoride

LA CROSSE, Wis. -

La Crosse's drinking water will soon have less fluoride in it.

The Board of Public Works approved a plan this week to reduce the level of fluoride to 0.7 milligrams per liter. It's currently at 1 milligram.

Officials say it's a fairly easy switch to make and will save the city some money. The change was prompted because of new fluoride guidelines at the federal level.

"People won't notice the difference as far as the taste of the water, or the appearance of the water or anything," said La Crosse Utilities Manager Mark Johnson. "It's just the actual dosage and the concentration of fluoride in the water will be reduced."

The city has been putting fluoride in the water since 1988.
