LA CROSSE, Wis. -

Although the snowmobile trails in La Crosse County are open, the La Crosse County Snowmobile Alliance says most trails are in poor condition.

The county trails, which include the Great River Trail from Trempealeau to Onalaska and the La Crosse River Trail from Onalaska to Rockland, opened Saturday at 8 a.m. The organization says groomer operators have reported that the snow cover is spotty and they’re finding little snow to work with.

Snowmobilers say they’re excited the trails are finally open but they say, without more snow, they won't be open long.

"They're average," said Dough Schoenfeld of Holmen. "We could use some more snow. but for today, it's been a lot of fun. There's enough snow to get out and have some fun,"

Snowmobilers are reminded to stay on public trails. If you trespass on private land you could face a fine of more than $200.

You can call the snowmobile condition hotline at (608) 782-4500 for current conditions.
