The La Crosse City Council approved a new budget without a tax increase.

The council passed the budget during a reconsideration meeting Tuesday night.

Mayor Matt Harter had threatend to veto because of a $50,000 tax increase and says that money should be taken from the city's reserve fund instead. The council approved an amendment that takes the money from the reserve fund.

"It's a good budget, like I said, a lot of compromise came to pass, it keeps the tax rate flat for the taxpayers here in La Crosse and I think it sends a strong message to them that their common council is working hard for them," said Mayor Harter.

The mayor says the change is more of a symbolic gesture since it saves the average taxpayer about two dollars.
