Iowan charged with shooting hunting dogs
A southeast Iowa man has been charged with animal cruelty, accused of shooting two dogs that had been chasing a raccoon on his rural property.
The Hawk Eye reports that 51-year-old William Totemeier surrendered at the Des Moines County Jail on Friday and has already posted bond for his release.
He told officers the dogs had been chasing his cattle when he shot them the previous weekend. The hunters say the dogs were nowhere near any cattle when they were shot.
Totemeier's attorney, Steven Ort, says Totemeier regretted taking the actions he did to protect his livestock.
