CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) -

The city of Centerville has terminated the contract of a convicted Iowa sex offender it hired as temporary city administrator.

Mayor Jim Senior says in a letter Wednesday that the city did not run a criminal check on 37-year-old Kevin Stocker, of Elkhart, before hiring him to help with the city's budget. Senior says city policy requires background checks on potential employees, but not on consultants.

Senior says he and the city did not know about Stocker's conviction before he was hired. But he says he supports Stocker.

The Iowa Sex Offender Registry says Stocker was convicted of enticing a minor in August 2006 in Black Hawk County. Senior says authorities posed as a minor. Stocker was given probation and a suspended prison sentence of two years.
