IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -

The University of Iowa has reassigned an athletics department official in the wake of what the president called lapses in the case of an academic counselor accused of improperly touching athletes.

Athletic Director Gary Barta said Friday that associate athletics director Fred Mims would no longer oversee student services and compliance. Barta said the unit will be reorganized into two.

A spokesman says Mims will assist in the reorganization then hold a position related to student athlete welfare.

The action comes amid criticism of the handling of Peter Gray, who resigned earlier this month after an internal investigation found that he had made some students uncomfortable with frequent massages and hugs.

President Sally Mason apologized for "an isolated breakdown" of the school's commitment to protect students and ordered a review.
