Iowa officer pleads not guilty in rape report case
A northern Iowa police officer has pleaded not guilty to accusations that he brushed off a woman's report of rape.
Charles City officer Todd Smith, 49, has been charged with misdemeanor misconduct. He's on paid administrative leave from the department.
A court report says Smith responded to a rape report on July 14. The report says Smith told the woman he doubted the bruises she showed him were new and that if there had been sex between her and the suspect, it was her fault because she'd been drinking.
Smith's attorney, Joel Yunek, has said it's "a case of perceived insensitivity."
