CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) -

A northern Iowa police officer faces a misconduct charge, accused of brushing off a woman's report of rape.

Charles City officer Todd Smith has been charged with misdemeanor misconduct.

A court report says Smith responded to a rape report on July 14. The report says Smith told the woman he doubted the bruises she showed him were new and that if there had been sex between her and the suspect, it was her fault because she'd been drinking.

The report says Smith didn't perform any of the investigative duties required of him.

The 49-year-old Smith released a statement Tuesday in which he says he isn't guilty.
Smith's attorney, Joel Yunek, says it's "a case of perceived insensitivity."
