Iowa man gets prison for trying to hire hit man
A man who pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and was later convicted of trying to hire a hit man to kill an Iowa police chief has been sentenced to 70 years in prison.
Federal prosecutors say Lorenzo Harris-Thompson, of Mount Vernon, was sentenced Wednesday in Cedar Rapids. He was found guilty in June of trying to hire a hit man to kill Mount Vernon Police Chief Mark Winder to stop his testimony at a sentencing hearing on the weapons charge.
He was convicted of attempted obstruction of justice, attempted murder of a witness and using a telephone to conduct a murder for hire.
Harris-Thompson was sentenced to 10 years on the weapons charge and 60 years in the attempted murder case, to be served consecutively.
