DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A billboard that equates eating bacon with smoking cigarettes is going up for a month in Des Moines, capital of the nation's top pork-producing state.
According to The Des Moines Register the billboard's placement coincides with a meeting of the National Pork Board, which is based in Des Moines.
The billboard shows bacon strips in a pack of cigarettes.
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is behind the billboard. The committee says American Institute for Cancer Research shows that less than 2 ounces of processed meats eaten daily can increase a person's risk for colorectal cancer by 21 percent.
The committee also criticized the upcoming Bacon Festival in Des Moines. Festival organizer Brooks Reynolds invited the committee to attend and share its message.
