Iowa City to consider banning plastic grocery bags
The City Council has scheduled a discussion on whether Iowa City should ban plastic grocery bags.
The council is expected to take up the proposal during a work session Tuesday.
Officials say several groups have approached the city over the years, seeking the ban for environmental reasons. The latest group to do so is 100 Grannies for a Livable Future, whose members mostly are older women interested in environmental issues.
Iowa City's recycling coordinator, Jen Jordan, says a ban isn't necessary and that the promotion of tote bags, recycling options and educational campaigns should be continued.
Public works director Rick Fosse says that any ban should be pursued regionally so shoppers won't be confused when they're at stores in nearby cities and so Iowa City retailers aren't at a disadvantage.
