IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -

Officials say the cockroach problem at Hoover Elementary School in Iowa City is under control.

Interim Principal John Saehler told the Iowa City Press-Citizen that he hasn't seen any live cockroaches in the building since just after Thanksgiving.

District chief operating officer David Dude says the last full extermination treatment was conducted Dec. 1 and another is scheduled this weekend. Dude says more treatments will be scheduled over winter break.

He also says teachers are being more diligent about the handling and storage of food in classrooms.

Johnson County Public Health Department records say one school staffer had reported seeing 50 cockroaches in a classroom.

County Public Health Director Doug Beardsley says one of his inspectors will make a follow-up visit at the school in January.
