Iowa City looks to improve popular pedestrian mall
Iowa City officials are beginning an effort to redesign the downtown pedestrian mall.
Nancy Bird, executive director of Iowa City Downtown District, tells the Iowa City Press-Citizen the key is to maintain the many aspect of the mall that work well while also making updates.
She noted rusted kiosks, trash bins that don't incorporate recycling and aging benches.
The city has set aside $350,000 from its general fund for design and engineering work. Another $2 million has been set aside for improvements that would be made over three years.
The public will have a chance to weigh in on the plans at public hearings that could begin as early as May.
